The newest hero of APTI is unique in that she earned her hero ranking while off-duty! On May 30, 2015 Officer Jessica Hawkins of the Greenville Police Department in South Carolina participated in a charity run. While leaving the event, and still in her running clothes, she heard a call on her radio about a disabled woman in an electric wheelchair that had fallen down a 20-foot embankment and into a creek. Officer Hawkins was near the incident location and responded. She found the wheelchair crashed near the creek and found the woman in the water. Officer Hawkins jumped into the water and held the woman's head above water until additional rescue personnel arrived to help her. Along with saving the woman's life, Officer Hawkins also visited her in the hospital and assisted her with getting a new wheelchair.
