Chicago Police Commander Shot In The Line Of Duty

by Ian D Scofield

Tuesday the 13th of February 2018 was the end of watch for Commander Paul Bauer from the Chicago Police Department.  He was fatally shot by a suspect who had alluded other officers.  The commander is survived by a wife and a daughter.

While attending a training, the Commander heard a radio call go out that officers had had an altercation with a subject and the subject had escaped.  He ran into the subject and confronted him not far from one of the state’s office buildings.  The suspect shot the commander, fatally wounding him.

Commander Paul Bauer was a prominent leader in the Chicago Police department and watched over the 18th District as the District Commander.  His death is tragic and mourned by many law enforcement officers and civilians alike around the country.  He had the chance to touch many lives and help many officers throughout the years.

In addition to being a big loss, Commander Bauer’s death was a rare occurrence.  It is not often that a Police Commander or higher ranking LEO is killed in the field.  Unfortunately no LEO is immune from the high risk that comes with the job.

Commander Bauer was a heavy advocate for keeping dangerous criminals off the street.

With a highlight on the fact that no level of law enforcement is safe, all LEO’s at every level need to keep up their training.  Visiting the range and practicing hand-to-hand techniques will help to keep you on the top of your game.  As will refreshing your de-escalation skills regularly.

Once again, the staff here at APTI join the rest of the country in mourning the loss of Commander Paul Bauer, end of watch 13 February 2018.  Stay safe out there and stay frosty.
